Noticed something different about Lookout Mountain lately? Machines moving soil, trail fairies placing rock, and…what’s that I see from the interstate…BERMS? 

Spearfish Trails Coalition is both humbled and excited to invite you to our very first trailgate. Help us open a brand-new connection in the Spearfish trail system!

In partnership with the City of Spearfish, generous support from AARP, and many volunteer hours, we’re honored to unveil the newly completed Sandstone Connector Trails—and reveal their new names (chosen by you).

What’s a Trailgate?

It’s like tailgating, but trailside! Here’s the idea: We’ll bring the snacks, beverages, and some stoke. You’ll bring your walking shoes, a bike and helmet, questions, ideas, and enthusiasm. We’ll all gather at the base of the trail to hang out, learn about the trail-building process, and answer any questions. After a few remarks, we’ll all depart for a ride or hike on the new trails and greater Lookout trail system.

Event Schedule

📍 Saturday, October 25
Location: Meet at Nevada Trailhead

2:00 PM – Group meets at Nevada Trailhead

We’ll hike together to the starting point of the new trail. If you prefer, you’re welcome to bike in—just be sure to bring a helmet. Please wear appropriate footwear and dress for the weather. The route covers approximately 0.75 miles on singletrack trail.

2:30 PM – Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Featuring remarks from the Spearfish Trails Coalition and the official unveiling of the Sandstone Connector trail name.

3:15 PM – Trail Exploration

Enjoy a mini-session on trail etiquette, followed by organized group hikes and bike rides—or simply relax and enjoy the trailside atmosphere.

5:00 PM – After-Party at Spearfish Brewing Co.

Raise a glass with fellow trail lovers! Join us for drinks, great company, and merry-making to celebrate the new trail—and all that’s to come.
